A Modern Canadian Bedtime Story

Once upon a time, there was a mean bear with black fur and sharp yellow claws. He lived in a forest in Northern Quebec where they grew maple trees and the sap was made into famous Canadian maple syrup. Over time, the bear got greedy and decided he didn't want to share, he wanted all the sap for himself. The bear started chasing people out of the forest when they came to collect the sap. He growled and roared and charged them. Sometimes, he got close enough to scratch them and he tore the hat off of one poor farmer so fast it cut some of his hair!

All the people who harvested the maple syrup gathered one day and decided they needed to figure out a solution to their bear problem. The townspeople didn't know what to do! They were all afeared that the bear would eat them if they went back to the forest. But then one little girl got up. Her name was Lucy and she had curly blond hair and blue eyes and was the prettiest little 5 year old anyone had ever seen.
She said she would go into the forest and ask the bear nicely to stop. No one wanted her to go, everyone shouted. Little Lucy insisted and her daddy, a great big burly man himself, said he would go with her. She was his little princess and always melted his heart.

So he took her out to the woods, followed by the townspeople at a far distance. They went in slowly, little Lucy clutched in her daddy's arms. She asked her dad to put her down, so he did and followed her as she walked closer. They went deep into the woods, and Lucy went faster than her dad could go, since she was smaller. She got lost. Suddenly, the forest went quiet and all Lucy could hear was a growling sound coming from somewhere in front of her.

It started low first, but with loud thumps, like something running, it got louder and louder until she was shaking and shivering in fright. The bear came snarling around a tree and stopped right in front of her and roared and growled! Lucy just stood there shaking, and the bear kept roaring and shouting. When he stopped roaring, he looked at her, this little girl who hadn't said anything or ran away.

He asked her why she was still there, it confused him since he'd never met anyone who would stand up to him before. She said her daddy was a big scary man, but inside he was just a teddy bear waiting to be snuggled. The bear snorted in disbelief.

"But I am a BEAR! Not a man! I cannot be snuggled!" he shouted. "Has anyone every tried?" Lusy asked. "Err. No... " The bear looked startled. He said he was just there to protect the maple sap so no one could have the syrup they loved so much. Lucy asked why he wanted the sap, since he couldn't make syrup himself, and raw sap didn't taste good. The bear said he was upset that everyone around the world recognized Canada for its syrup and not for the bear, since the bear was a great big animal, and the sap was just ooze from a tree. He was insulted that no one was afraid of him, so he decided to change that.

Lucy just looked at him and pointed out that all the villagers were terrified of him and that they were too frightened to come and stop him. The bear asked again why she wasn't frightened and Lucy said that she just wanted to give him a hug and ask him nicely not to stop the people from collecting maple sap, and she thought that he would be a decent bear and let them back into the forest.

Never having had a snuggle before, the bear wasn't sure how it worked, but Lucy went right up and grabbed his leg up to his knee, since that's all she could reach, and just hugged and stroked his fur. The bear didn't know what to do. He was stunned. A real hug! and she was so pretty with her bright blue eyes and golden curls. So the bear reached down and picked her up and placed her on his knee and hugged her back. It was the best feeling in the world he thought! To have someone just be nice to him and not try and scare him away.

He put Lucy down and she looked up at him with a smile and said she was lost and asked if he would take her back to her dad. The bear said he would and so he walked beside her, guiding her back to the edge of the forest where her dad was waiting, nervous and anxious that his little angel had disappeared. Lucy ran to her dad and hugged him fiercely, and the bear just hung back in the trees, scared that everyone would run away when he came out. Lucy explained to her dad, and to everyone, that the bear was nice, and he wouldn't scare them away any more, he was just lonely and needed friends.

Then, the bear crept out gently, not wanting to scare anyone. The villagers promised to give the bear some of the syrup, so he could taste its sweet, sticky gooeyness for himself and see how amazing it is. That was, if he would let them back into the woods to harvest the sap. So, the bear agreed, provided they only went in half way, instead of taking the whole forest, so that he could still hunt and be fierce on the other half and be a bear like he was meant to be. This suited everyone, so it was agreed

Lucy herself was allowed to bring the jars of syrup to the bear and leave them on the edge of the forest where he could come and take them back to his den. The maple syrup trade picked up again, this time with a large black bear on the label, a symbol of Canada's dangerous and fearsome wilderness.

The End.
